Richard forgive my tongue in cheek response above but it is supported by an article from the May 2, 1863 Missouri Daily Democrat (Lebanon?) report the raiders killed 7 men of the 8th MSM on the 22nd then proceeded to Rev Smith house called him out and proceeded to fire on him, a trial at escape in vain with as many as 2O balls through his body..rebels last seen crossing the Osage near Taberville in Bates county.

No mention of Quantrill though sounds like him and should be able to confirm from other primary sources. Sounds like he was at least shot at while on porch, tried to run/escape and subsequently shot multiple times, likely by multiple shooters.

Maybe a combination of several of the reported actions.

PS: Have you seen the probate and estate issues? No will, embezzlement by 3rd wife, big debts, land transactions suspect, wasn't finally settled until 1927!
