Re: First Missouri Secession Vote

Yep. Piece of cake. That's why no comprehensive dedicated modern scholarly work on the Jefferson City and Neosho secession efforts has been published, and why every writer who has stuck their toe in the water by publishing peripherally on the subject has confused the issue instead of clearing up that mystery and misconception. And as for Leeper, he was an Unconditional Unionist/Radical Unionist, so figure that one out. Jackson and the legislature did miscalculate mightily on instituting the Convention in the first place and granting the imprimatur it did to those guys, which was breathtaking in scope. Not only did Jackson et al. bring into power, and grant power, to a mass of Unconditional Unionists, the specific wording in the legislative bill creating the Convention handed the legal levers of power to them on a silver platter the moment the Southern-supporting members of the government evacuated Jefferson City en masse.
