Skirmish at Reedsville, Callaway County

Another of the German language articles sent to me by Kirby Ross:

Daily Gazette of the West (St. Louis, Missouri) Wednesday, August 20, 1862
Reneftes (Note 2) with the Evening Post
Official news at the local headquarters reported from Missouri, that Colonel Smart had a skirmish with Cobb's gang near Reedsville, in Callaway County in which the notorious Captain McConnell (Note 1) from Warren County and two others were killed and Cobb’s Party was hunted down. Shortly afterward he came upon twelve of them, who escaped into the forest leaving horses and rifles which fell into our hands. A small troop of enrolled militia captured two of Porter's men yesterday with their horses and weapons. Rumor has it that west of Sedalia there was a skirmish. There has been neither an official report nor reliable news.

Notes:
1. Bruce Nichols mentions this incident in his first volume and that a Captain McConnell was one of the rebels killed. Fold3 has cards on several McConnells but none of them is recorded as a Captain.
2. Reneftes is apparently an archaic German word. I did a Google Books advances search and found it in several German language books from the Civil War era but I was unable to find a definition.
