In the misc files I find a hodge podge of records which lead me to believe the Union officials in St. Louis were having trouble keeping track of the various William Lamptons. First is a letter, actually a diatribe that goes for six pages, by Col Wim Switzler identifies the the man released from prison in March as "Buck" Lampton. He wants to know who authorized young Lampton's release from Alton. Buck was the nick name of the elder William Lampton. Further I find an oath signed by William Lampton on March 16, 1863 of Boone County described as 59 years 5 feet 10 inches, Blue eyes, Brown with some gray hair. Witnessed by J Hildebrand Col Commanding.

I then find a certificate to Smithers Undertaking for William Lampton Boone County "6 feet" died Gratiot May 27, 1963 congestion of the lungs.

I then find a matching bond receipt for $1000 also dated March 16, 1863 for the elder William Lampton

There is then a copy of the bond the younger Lampton posted to Burnnett of Merrill's horse with his brother James acting as security from May 1862.

The story gets closed with a record that clearly contains 2 letters from Lamptons that are headed by a comment added "with Purcell's gang, violation of oath, Gen Merrill orders him held during war, a hard case" attached therein are two letters one written Nov 26th 1862, in which the younger Lampton states he is unsure why he was arrested, perhaps for "feeding southern men and having sworn in Purcell's company. The second letter in a different handwriting, written May 15th 1863, in which the elder Lampton pleads his case, arrest on requisition on Apr 14th, landed at Gratiot Apr 18th, unknown charges, has oath sworn before Col Hildebrand on March 16th. Has written to Provost Marshall twice, not heard anything and requests a trial.

Therefore I postulate JR swore oath and Bond (Merrills) May 1862, joined Purcell Aug 3, was at Columbia raid, was wounded near Concord Callaway Co Oct 16 1862, went home to heal was arrested sent to Gratiot Nov 14, 1862, released from Alton likely by mistake or other means. Switzer blows up, identifies JR as "Buck" Lampton, Meanwhile elder Lampton Sr, swears oath and bond in front of Col Hildebrand Mar 16, 1863 (about time son arrives back in town). Orders come down to re-arrest Lampton and consequently "Buck" Lampton gets arrested and sent to Gratiot, he pleads his case, falling on deaf ears, and subsequently dies likely of pneumonia. The only person that clearly would have known the two Lamptons were different men appears to me to be Jonathon Adams, Asst PM of Boone County who took the younger's statement in Nov 1862 and hustled "Buck" off in April 1863.

Classic case of the father dies for the sins of son? ...only way I can piece the evidence together by timeline, no where is a middle initial used in the Union records. Only by ages and dates can I make sense of it as all the records are co mingled and filed/indexed under William Lampton of Mississippi not Missouri! Whew...
