John Matlock / 10th Missouri Cav.

Late last year, I had posted information regarding a John B. Matlock who signed up with the 10 Mo. Cav. on August 10th, 1862 in Johnson County, Mo. It was debated whether he might have been at the August 11, 1862 battle of Independence, Mo. and that was based on some family info I found from an obit. Here is that excerpt:

MATLOCK, J.B. - Mr. J.B. Matlock was born in Franklin, Kentucky, October 29, 1839, moved to Johnson County, Missouri in the early setting up of that State and resided there the most of his life. He moved to Prairie Grove 3 years ago where he died March the 17th, 1925 and was buried in the local cemetery. The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church, March 18th. Deceased was married to Nancy Hough early in 1864. To this union were born five daughters; four living and one dead. They are Mrs. Annie Maupin of Lamar, Missouri; Mrs. Lou Garrett, Sperry, Oklahoma; Mrs. Ella Crane, Sand Springs, Oklahoma and Mrs. Maggie Crane, Tulsa, Oklahoma, all of whom were very attentive to him in his last illness. Mr. Matlock enlisted in the Confederate army at the beginning of the war and served until it was over. He fought in several battles; Independence, Pea Ridge, was wounded at Wilson’s Creek and at Prairie Grove was Gen. Hindmans’ body guard.

I also find it funny that, Robert Houx, of the "Quantrill" Houx brothers was at August 11 Independence and then signed up with the 10th Mo. Cav. just four days later and was in the same company as Matlock. Co. G. Additionally, Houx and Matlock were both from Johnson County, Mo. and, I believe, didn't live far from each other.

With Independence listed in an 1861-62 time frame in the obituary, Robert Houx in the same company and both being from Johnson County, Mo., the coincidences are pretty surprising. I am beginning to believe that Matlock was at the August 11 battle.
