Attack on Ft. Davidson, John T. Warner 46 ark. cav

We had reached the R.R. about 200 yards from the fort. There was little order in our charge toward the fort, and we had reached a point where there were some small houses in a row, and [in] one place there was an opening in the shanties with a plank fence across the open space. I got my knees about the middle of this fence, placed my gun on the second or third plank, tok aim at someone on the wall of the fort, and though I pulled the trigger and fired, but just then a grape shot, an iron ball about one inch in diameter, struck the plank on which my gun rested. Itg came through the plank and struck me under the left arm, cutting through my old shirt. Rebounded and fell into my shirt sleeve. I was knocked completely over and scared about as bad as a boy could be. Marsh Wagnon, one of my comrades, was near and I spoke to him saying I was wounded. So I retreated up over the foot of the mountain and back to where we had left our horses. Then I found that I was not seriously hurt only a rather ugly bruise, which lasted a week or so.
