Some actions of Major General John M. Schofield in Missouri:

1862 – Please see Schofield’s annual report in OR Vol. 13 Pages 1-28.

11-27-1861. Given command of Missouri State Militia (MSM) by MG Halleck.

4-10-1862. MG Samuel R. Curtis leaves operational command of Department of the Missouri to BG Schofield, as Curtis is ordered to pursue Van Dorn’s Army of the West southeast toward Memphis.

9-19-1862. Department of the Missouri expanded to include Kansas, with Schofield still in operational command of Missouri with MG Samuel R. Curtis away at Helena.

9-24-1862. MG Curtis returns to St. Louis and resumes full command of the Department of the Missouri.

9-26-1862. BG Schofield requests and is assigned by MG Curtis to the command of Southwest Missouri and Schofield’s assembly of his Army of the Frontier with active operations covering Northwest Arkansas, Southwest Missouri, Kansas, and Indian Territory.

9-27-1862. BG Blunt’s Southeast Kansas command put under Schofield. BG Herron’s command is also. These combined forces (as Army of the Frontier) ultimately will push south into Northwest Arkansas and fight CSA’s MG Hindman’s Army of the T-M, at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, December 7, 1862.

11-20-1862. BG Schofield gets “sick” and temporarily leaves field command to Blunt for St. Louis.

2-3-1863. BG J. M. Schofield promoted to Major General (22-2-95)

5-24-1863. MG Schofield given command of Department of the Missouri, replacing MG Curtis.

12-10-1863. MG Schofield given temporary leave of duties of Department of the Missouri.

1-30-1864. MG William S. Rosecrans replaces MG Schofield as commander of the Department of the Missouri, as Schofield heads for a new army field assignment (Army of the Ohio) following Lt. Gen. U. S. Grant being given command of the entire US Army by President Lincoln.
