According to his daughter Eva Mathieu in a 1938 WPA interview of pioneers in Lawton, OK:
…"My father, Alpheus Payne, was a Capt. in the CSA during the Civil War. He was born in Scott Co, VA [however, on all census records he said he was born in TN], a son of David Payne and Margret Thompson Payne. He attended school in Rogersville, TN, and Danville, KY. In 1844 they came to Ralls Co, MO, where his mother died. In 1846 he went to Mexico as a Post rider. The following year he enlisted in Walker's battalion where he served for two years. On April 10, 1849, he was married to Nissidia Chitwood and they settled in Ralls County. Here they engaged in farming until 1854, at which time, he moved his family… to a farm in Audrain Co. During the year of 1857, they settled in southern Mexico… At the conclusion of the Civil War… he joined Genl Joe Shelby's expedition to Mexico. The next year he returned to Ralls County and purchased the Bluff City Flour and Grist Mill which he operated until 1880. Mother died during Sept. of that year, leaving 4 daughters. Father then moved to Texas where he operated a large cattle ranch for two years. In 1882, he returned to Missouri, married Mrs. Harriet Archer, a widow, and settled on a farm. The following year, in addition to the farm he operated the Sellsville Milling firm. He and his last wife have one son who lives now (1938) in Pike Co, MO."
