Civil War Veteran And Writer, Dies
Had Been on Staff of Eagle and Other Papers
Was Uncle of Late War Poet

Capt. George L. Kilmer, Civil War veteran and former reporter and special writer on The Eagle, died yesterday at his home, 477 E. 25th St. He was 89 and had been ill a long time from complications of old age. Funeral services will be held tomorrow night at the home at 8 o'clock. Lafayette Post, 140, G. A R., of which he was a former officer and one of the few surviving members, will participate. Interment will take place Friday at Lakeville, Conn. Captain Kilmer's wife was the late Mrs. Emma Theodosia Kilmer, who died in 1914. The only immediate survivor Is a brother, Dr. F. B. Kilmer of New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Capt. Kilmer was an uncle of the late Joyce Kilmer, beloved American poet and World War fighter. Capt. Kilmer was born in Salisbury, Conn. He ran away when 16 to enlist and during four years fighting rose to the rank of captain. He took part in many of the big battles, while attached to the 27th New York Volunteers. He was wounded at Richmond and Vicksburg, and never fully recovered from his Injuries. After the war he studied at the University of Bonn, Germany. On his return he entered the newspaper field as a reporter and special writer. He was connected with the Sun, the Herald, as well as with The Eagle, at various times. He also was associated with the Churchman. Edited Tactics In History. In 1911 he was military tactics editor of a ten-volume history of the Civil War, on which he was an authority, titled "Photographic History of the Civil War and the Battles and Leaders of the Civil War." He had lived In Brooklyn for the last 30years.
