Re: Absalom Miller Glenn - Killed by Bushwhackers

Jim and John,

I don't show any skirmishes or other guerrilla activity on or just before 16 March 1862 in Linn County or those counties adjacent to Linn County.

I know there were Confederate recruiters active then in NE Missouri, because Union patrols occasionally came across their camps. On 12 March 1862 Lieutenant Thomas H. Barnes' patrol of 15 troopers of the 1st Iowa Cavalry arrested a southern man 14 miles from Mexico in Audrain County, then encountered 150 Rebels in battle line just down the road. Both sides exchanged some shots, evidently with no casualties, and then both sides went their own way. Barnes' Iowa patrol captured two Confederate officers on their way back to Mexico, a Colonel Murray and a Lieutenant Colonel Daugherty. Carolyn Bartel's 1995 edition of "The Forgotten Men," mentions on page 84 that LTC Joseph H. Daugherty of St. Charles was captured 12 March 1862 in Monroe County, and was eventually sent to Alton, IL military prison (source for this last part is Eakins' 1995 "MO POWs," Joseph H. Daugherty listing. The Columbia newspaper, "Missouri Statesman" had an article about these captures in its 21 March issue.).

During the week of March 16-22 about 300 guerrillas or Confederate recruits led by Moore and Bill Dunn in north Knox County killed five men of the "state militia," wounded two more, and robbed Union families of quilts and blankets, indicating that these Rebels were getting ready to travel, probably to the southern army in Arkansas. (Source, Broadfoot Publ. Co., "Supplement to the 'Official Records', vol. 35, 6th Cavalry Missouri State Militia (Union), pp. 330-1.)

No, I don't see any specific actions in or near Linn County about this part of March 1862 that could account for Glenn being killed. Sorry. I certainly don't always find records of shooting scrapes, even this far behind Union military lines.

I wish you good hunting.
