C. Chiles, Private, Company E, Shank’s Regiment Missouri Cavalry,* enlisted August 15, 1862 in Jackson County by Col. Thompson, wounded in the battle at Helena, Arkansas, July 4, 1863, recorded on the Jan/Feb, 1864 muster roll as absent, on sick furlough since September 22, 1863, no further records

12th Missouri Cavalry Rgt.

Col. David Shanks, LtCol. William H. Erwin,
Majs. Samuel Bowman, H. J. Vivien

The regiment, formerly the Jackson County Cavalry, was organized in the
summer of 1863. The unit was in Shelby's brigade and confronted the
Federals in Missouri and Arkansas. It lost two men at Marks' Mills,
Ark. and lost 35 men during Price's 1864 Missouri expedition.

As of May 3, 1864 it reported 35 officers and 292 enlisted present.

It was included in the June 2, 1865 surrender of the Trans-Mississippi
Department.

This regiment was nicknamed the "Jackson's County Cavalry" since a majority of its men came from the Jackson county area of western Missouri. First commanded by Col. Upton Hays, and later by Colonels Beal G. Jeans and David Shanks. It was also commonly called "Shank's Missouri Cavalry".
