Mary, I believe that the Weast name was a problem with the census taker during that time spelling then name wrong (I believe it was the 1880 census that had them listed that way?). My family is descended from the children that Dr. Hart had post-Civil War with his 2nd wife, Ellen H. Layton. They all retained the name Hart. I'm not sure that Ellen or her family ever knew about David's activities during the Civil War. Ellen's family were definitely on the side of the South & after David died, Ellen remarried a man who served in the Confederacy, and they both attended Confederate reunions.
