Re: Duties of Forage Master
In Response To: Duties of Forage Master ()

From 'Wagon Boss and Mule Mechanic' by R.M. Peck who served as wagon master for the 2nd Indian Home Guard at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation. Forage trains moved constantly between Fort Gibson and Rhea's Mill in Arkansas for the troops at Fort Gibson.

"After reaching the mills from Fort Gibson, the teams would be sent out in divisions, under escorts, to hunt up loads of grain or any other subsistence. The grain would be brought to the mills and ground, sacked, and sent to Fort Gibson as fast as a train load could be thus prepared. When the mills could not grind a load quick enough we finished out with grain.

I had to act as Forage Master also on these trips, and had orders to seize all manner of subsistence that I could find, giving receipts for the same, which would be paid, at a liberal price, at the Fort Gibson Commissary office-provided that the owner of the stuff taken could prove loyalty to Uncle Sam."
