I don't want to throw too big a monkey wrench but Dr. William HH Cundiff was assistant surgeon 2nd Battn Cav MSM. He was definitely a Union Man from Harrisonville MO. He went on to be the Surgeon of 13th Regt MO Cav. and Asst Surgeon 6th MSM Cav.

He died Dec 4, 1899 at Pleasant Hill MO.

Col James H R Cundiff of St Joseph was well known in the realm of St. Joseph and is listed as Adjutant 1st Mo Cav (Confederate) on Aug 25th , 1862. He held the position (part of Bowen's Command) until April 1863. see http://www.fold3.com/image/88407832/ He was appointed Aid de Camp with rank of Colonel by Gov Reynolds here is that supporting documentation see http://www.fold3.com/image/66423512/
His wife's orders to leave St. Joseph is here dated Oct 1863. http://www.fold3.com/image/281856163/

William L Cundiff the private that died at Alton was a part of Poindexter's Regt, Lawther's Temporary Dismounted Cav. captured Columbia Mo Oct 1862 and received Alton Nov 27, 1862. He died on Dec 15, 1862 of Typhoid pneumonia.

The confusion arises from the fact that there was a William H L Cundiff that also lived in St. Joseph Missouri pre war and was a principal in the Livery Stable firm of Cundiff & Rusk. He survived the war and filed a claim for services with the adjutant general in 1874 for horses used for internment of deceased at St. Joseph. see http://www.fold3.com/image/299028760/

Bruce A's note about an 1885 death date for James H R Cundiff is supported by this marker
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=90691134&ref=acom at Mt Mora Cemetery, St. Joseph Mo. As well as a note that Major James HR Cundiff editor St Joseph Gazette married Cecilia Keedy Oct 11, 1855 in St. Joseph by Rev Hoagland in the Atchison Squatter Sovereign Oct 17, 1855. (published Kansas Historical Quarterly, pg 452 August - Nov 1950 ) He appears not to have a CSA military marker. He was born 1832 in Virginia. I'll post more on his bio with sources in a subsequent post.

I've not taken the time to figure out if any of these 4 were related to one another but we are clearly talking about 4 individuals here and I think it safe to say your info on Col. James H. R. Cundiff and Petersen's Sterling Price's Lieutenants is correct for the most part.
