Duties of Forage Master

Greeting to this interesting forum from a first time poster.

I'm researching my maternal great grandfather, Francis Marion George who, along with his brother Archibald M., enlisted in the 2nd Missouri Cavalry (CSA) on May 16, 1861. Both served side by side for the war's duration in Company A commanded by Capt. Zollinger. Francis's service record indicates that he was appointed Forage Master for the Regiment in April, 1862. However, I have only a vague sense of what a forage master actually did, and would appreciate hearing from anybody knowledgable about what such a duty involved. Also, would an appointment as forage master exclude one from combat? I ask because the list on battles on his record stops at Elk Horn, just before his appointment, whereas his brother Archibald's card lists most of the 2nd Mo Cav's engagements.

If anyone has run across the George brothers in his or her research I would appreciate hearing from you.
