Re: Info on Elliott's attack on Pins near Carthage

Thanks for the reply Bruce. From Edward's description, this about the time of the action at Shirley's Crossing but the description in Ritchie's report and another mention in the ORs don't fit Edward's description of Capt Elliott's attack. In Britton's "Union Indian Brigade" and "The Civil War on the Border" he states the attack at Shirley's was by Hawpe's 31st Texas and perhaps some of Watie's and Livingston's men. It appears to me these are separate events -- one with Shelby's men and the other with Cooper's command. The group of "Pins and Negroes" described by Edwards may members of Ritchie's 2nd IHG in camp with their families instead of with their regiment.

As you know, in the ORs there is little mention of the action at Shirley's Ford on Sept 20 1862 and no mention of the event Edward's describes. I was hoping to run across memoirs of local residents or other sources that could add to what little is known. I'll keep looking.

And, by the way, Myra Maybelle Shirley married Sam Starr, a Cherokee. Sam Starr and his second cousin Frank West killed each other in a shoot out in 1886. Frank West is the great-great grandfather of our illustrious webmaster, Jim Martin, and myself.
