Re: Major George C Marshall/Union 2nd mo ca exec

Roy,

How may I be of service? I admit that I usually don't work in regular units and regular actions, but in the guerrilla or irregular actions in Civil War Missouri.

However, I can freely discuss what little I know about Union Major George C. Marshall's death, since he was mortally wounded in about east Johnson County, MO between 19 and 21 January 1862 while skirmishing with southern irregulars, deep inside Union-occupied Missouri. My main source for the major's wounding is the "Daily Missouri Democrat" newspaper of St. Louis of 23 January 1862 in an article entitled "Refugees, Etc." Major Marshall led a large force of "Merrill's Horse" (otherwise known as the Union 2nd Missouri Cavalry Regiment) from Sedalia west into east Johnson County to deal with the force of southern recruiters active there. Marshall's cavalry patrol was successful in capturing a large number of southern recruits, but, of course, he lost his life from exchanging shots with two of them. Did that help?
