Richard: To my knowledge my family was not related to Col. James McGehee, although at one time our name was spelled the same. My ancestors migrated from Louisa County, VA to Todd County, KY, and then my great-grandfather settled in southeast Missouri. My grandfather dropped the middle "e" from the family name as it was silent.

I have visited several sites in the Kansas City area related to the battle of Westport, although that was many years ago when I attended law school at UMKC. One of my classmate's wife was docent at the Wornall House, and I have spent hours there studying law, watching basketball, etc. Those were some good times.

As you know, many accounts of the battle have Col. McGehee being killed there. In fact, I read somewhere that his body was placed in a pen of some sort with many other Confederate dead. Mistakes do creep into the history of the war.

Regards.
