Ishmael M. Copeland, Company B, Mitchell’s Missouri Regiment, enlisted August 4, 1862 at Eleven Points, Mo. by C. S. Mitchell for 3 years, elected 1st Lieutenant August 7, 1862, absent on recruiting service April 30 to July 1, 1863, cashiered by the sentence of a General Court Martial August 26, 1863, S. O. No. 86-3, Dist. of Ark-Drayton, October 22, 1863, captured in Dunklin County, Mo. September 9, 1863, imprisoned at Gratiot St. Military Prison, St. Louis, September 16-20, 1863, the St. Louis Provost Marshal General. August 7, 1864, instructed the Commanding Officer of the Gratiot St. Prison “Will send under guard to this Office for examination the following named prisoner today, Ishmael Copeland, (Capt. W - Please send this man under strong Guard - He is a Guerrilla and guilty of Murder - and knows it - will escape at any risk), admitted Small Pox U. S. A. General Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. August 10, 1865, Varoloid, escaped the next day, description on enlistment, age 41, born in Tennessee, back eyes, black hair, dark complexion, 6’ 2”, appointed from Missouri, no further records

By S. O. No. 27, Headquarters Trans-Mississippi Department, dated Little Rock, January 28, 1863, the 7th (also known as Mitchell’s) and Frazier’s Battalions of Missouri Infantry were consolidated to form a regiment which was at first known as Mitchell’s (also the 5th) Regiment Missouri Infantry, but was later officially designated the 8th Regiment Missouri Infantry.
