Thank you, Bruce, I will check out those messages.

Lt. Col. Richard Brown of the 12th Mo. Cav. listed these problems with the Starr carbine:

1. The main spring in the cock being too weak, the hammer will not burst the cap more than three times out of seven, with the ordinary cap issued by the Ordnance Dept.

2. The hole in the cone being countersunk too much makes the top of the cone so sharp as to cut the cap in many instances without causing the ignition of the percussion matter.

3. The distance from the top of the cone to the cartridge is so great, than when in wet weather the cartridge becomes in the least particular damp, it will not explode one time out of a dozen.

"I would therefore earnestly ask that an inspection be ordered with a view to their condemnation."
