The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Cobbler, Adam Pvt Co. G 7th Miss.

Pvt. Cobbler seems a poor fit for a Missouri regiment based on a Petersburg, VA area parole. There weren't many from Missouri (CSA) who made it so far east, at least as privates. Perhaps Mr. McGhee will have some insight that will make it possible. The Mo. Cobbles (not Cobblers) that were the closest I found were various EMM and/or unionist except for one in the 8th MO Inf (CSA) from Missouri, Henry Cobble a Sgt. In McGhee's excellent Guide to Missouri Confederate Units this is Mitchell's regt formed in Aug. of '62 as a mounted unit in Oregon County, Mo. (southeast Mo.) This would fit Cobble's card as enlisting at Eleven Points Mill, Mo. on Aug 7, '62, surrendering in Alexandria, LA in June of '65. This corresponds with the overall pattern of many early enlisting Missouri CSA units as serving in the "western armies" of Mississippi and/or Tennessee (with even later units staying mostly in the trans-Mississippi.) Service back East was rare.

It sounds like the individual in question (Adam Cobbler) was in a Mississippi regt, but this is just a layman's appraisal and might be missing something critical that more learned contributors will note.
