Re: Col. Garnett, CSA, d. 17 Jun 1863, Vicksburg

I refer to Gary Webster’s “Confederate Roll of Honor, Known Confederate Dead Vicksburg Campaign,” where it is remarked “This would appear to be a duplicate of Col. Isham W. Garrett.”

Col. Garrett [20th Alabama], Brig. Gen. at the time of his death.

…..

06 17 1863 [Wednesday]

Early in the day Colonel Garret [Garrott], 20th Alabama, was shot dead through a porthole in our fortifications by a Yankee sharpshooter.

………

Colonel Garrott, twentieth Alabama, the pure patriot and gallant soldier, who was killed on June 17, while in the fearless discharge of his duties.

...

Col. Garrott was shot through the heart by a Yankee sharpshooter while on one of the Square Forts firing steps. He had been advanced to the rank of BGen., however that news had not at the time reached Vicksburg. The fort was redesignated Fort Garrott in his honor.
