The 16th Infantry was initially recruited as a cavalry unit in western Missouri. After the battle of Lone Jack the Missourians retreated to northwest Arkansas. Once there, Gen. Thomas Hindman dismounted the men and converted them to infantry. They fought as infantry for the balance of the war.
