Henry Cookwell, Private, Capt. Wilson’s Company,* Merrill’s Horse,** joined for duty and enrolled September 5, 1861 at Cincinnati for 3 years, died September 9, 1862 at Kirksville, Mo. from wounds received at Battle of Kirksville, age 28

KIRKSVILLE, MO.
AUG. 6TH, 1862

Kirksville, Mo., Aug. 6, 1862. Missouri State Militia
Cavalry. After pursuing a party of Confederates under Porter
for 8 days, Col. John McNeil with a detachment of militia
discovered them posted in the houses and outbuildings of
Kirksville. The Union force consisted of only 500 men, but
notwithstanding the greatly superior numbers of the enemy,
McNeill dashed into the town and drove them out, capturing 47
prisoners. About 15 of these were shot for having violated
paroles. The Federal casualties were 5 killed and 32 wounded.
McNeil estimated the enemy's killed at 150 and the wounded
between 300 and 400.
