Co. H, 9th Regiment Mo Cavalry

William Dennison, (2nd cousin 3x removed) born 1839 Reynolds or St. Francois County, living in Huzzah,Dent County, Mo in 1860; Pvt. Co H, 9th Regiment Mo Cavalry, then after consolidation, was with Co. M, 3rd Regiment Mo Cavalry at Benton Barracks, died 1 Jan 1863 of pneumonia at Convalescent Hosp. Benton Barracks.

"SERVICE.--Operations in Boone County November 1-10. Expedition from Rolla to Ozark Mountains and skirmish November 30-December 6 (Co. "H"). Discontinued by consolidation with 10th Missouri Cavalry December 4, 1862. Companies "G" and "H" attached to 3rd Missouri Cavalry December 11, 1862." Dyer, Frederick H.

Can any of you tell me about the skirmish (Co. H, 9th Reg.) referenced here? Why was Co. M of the 3rd Regiment posted to Benton Barracks?

U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Forms, 1928-1962 for William Dennison found on ancestry.com shows he was buried at Jefferson Barracks, Section 39, Grave 4354, but he doesn't show up on a search for burials there (the grave locator). Curious.
