Hello Richard -
Col Cyrus Sugg is the source for the claim that Bledsoe's battery was given captured Wiard rifles; I suspect he is being poetic. There are pretty good records of what guns the North lost during the battle, and there were NO Wiards (I'm not sure there were any in the battle). Almost certainly the 3-inch M.1861 Ordnance rifle was being referred to, of which six were captured by the Confederates. Somewhere (my notes are scattered, sorry) it is reported that Bledsoe's battery exchanged 2 howitzers and 2 3" rifles (likely iron & worn out) for 4 3-inch rifles (likely M.'61 Ordnance rifles) during/after Chickamauga. One source states John Morton's Tennessee battery also picked up two 3-inch "steel" rifles at Chickamauga, which if true accounts for all the Ordnance rifles that the North lost.
