George H. (NOT "N.") Sanger was the older brother of my great-grandfather and appears in the 1850 census in Boston in the family of his father, Henry Sanger. My grandmother told me 70 years ago that George had been taken from his home by the Confederates and killed on the spot; no further details. He left a young wife, Mary Ann (Holmes) Sanger (daughter of William A. Holmes - see 1860 Douglas County census, where they were living on the same farm - i.e., George, Mary Ann, and William. George is mistakenly called "Singer" in the Ancestry.com index (transcription)... George had taken up his father's profession as soap manufacturer (in 1858 Boston city directory). George also left behind an infant son, who later dropped the name Sanger and took his step-father's name (Mary Ann remarried).
