The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Possible Quantrill meeting point or hideout!

Mary,

Thanks for your reply, I am not writing a book on Quantrill or any Missouri Guerrillas I am a very, very amateur historian!! I leave those things to the pros! I am however interested in locating people and places that I have read about in regards to the Border War in particular and the Civil War in Missouri in general. My interest is to photo-document graves sites and locations where these events happened. There are to many books and authors to post here but, I will mention Bruce Nichols, Paul Peterson, Don Gilmore and Duncan Hansen as the inspiration (there are many others) for getting me out in the field to enjoy nature and history, I have also received help from folks on this board answering my questions. Basically, I am riding the coat tails of others and using their research to help me along. All my photos are just for myself and enjoyment, for me when I locate a grave site or specific location after reading the books of the aforementioned, I feel I know these people and places to a small extent. I know it sounds spooky!!! But, it's true, I understand or try to understand the situation or the reasons things where done.

There are many folks out doing what I am, documenting graves, monuments, battlefields and one of my newer interest taking photos of Antebellum homes currently, only in Missouri. Most of my work/effort or what I call enjoyment has been done in Missouri. I have only been doing this stuff for 4-5 years so my photo collection and information is small. I can't tell you how many cemeteries I have walked through looking for folks, when walking not only am I looking for a certain person I also look for birth dates between 1820-1848 and take a picture. I also have come to my own conclusion if I see a death date between 1862-1865 there is more then 50% chance it was Civil War related, (can't prove that statement, just what I have found) By taking photos of every grave that fits my criteria I have found a few Quantrill men or Guerrillas not as well known. Thanks to the work of Joanne C. Eakin and Donald R Hale with their excellent works "Branded as Rebels" once again they have made my enjoyment pay off. I also use Fold3 to help verify a Civil War soldier.

One question for everyone, I am looking for a book by Rose Mary Lankford, called "Encyclopedia of Quantrill's Guerrillas" does anyone know if this book is still available and how to go about getting a copy? Finally, thanks to all off you who have taken the time to answer my questions and point me in the right direction regarding me searches, I appreciate and admire your work, again thanks for letting me RIDE YOUR COAT TAILS.

Steve
