The camp you have in mind, I think, is Camp Herron. The principal occupants of the place were the 9th Iowa Infantry and the 26th Missouri, during Oct. 1861 until the 9th Iowa left in January, 1862 to take part in the Pea Ridge Campaign. No doubt the camp site was occupied by many other units over the course of the Civil War.

Pacific, and a lot of people, would like to locate the site of the camp. Many believe it was in a small valley now occupied by the silica plant east of town.
