More Detail to Grant's Location in Mexico
In Response To: U S Grant in Mexico, Missouri ()

Greg - Below is a newspaper article I happened to come across where a couple of folks tell where Grant's camp stood at Mexico, MO.

You should probably get a 1910 Mexico city directory to check the address of the Christian Church and John Atchison's house at that time. I do not know right off hand if there is a 1910 Sanborn map of Mexico that might show the church.

If anyone is researching Grant, the article also states: "the numerous articles about Gen. Grant which have appeared in the Intelligencer recently" so it might prove to be a research tool.

REMEMBERS WHEN HE HAULED SAND FOR GRANT HERE
JAS. E. GREEN SAYS HEADQUARTERS OF FAMOUS WARRIOR WERE
NEAR SITE OF CHRISTIAN CHURCH

James E. Green, an old resident of this city and vicinity, having read the numerous articles about Gen. Grant which have appeared in the Intelligencer recently, called at this office and verified the story of Grant having occupied a big tent as his headquarters while the troops were encamped on the "Common" in west Mexico. He said the tent was pitched on a spot near where the Christian Church now stands, perhaps on the government lot.

Mr. Green was impressed by the soldiers to haul sand and while thus engaged, Col. Grant noticed that his horses were unshod. Col. Grant gave orders to have Mr. Green's team taken to the blacksmith shop in the camp where the horses were shod.

"I was also cared for by Col. Grant," said Mr. Green, "who came out and asked if I had had anything to eat. He gave orders for the soldiers to take care of me at the mess. I remember the team of yellow horses Col. Grant drove and he always went flying."

FRANK WILLIAMS REMEMBERS WHEN GRANT WAS HERE

"I remember those dun horses Col. Grant drove around here quite well," said F. M. Williams, sexton at Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Williams said that he was living out in the country on his father's farm at the time of the Civil War and that his father came to town quite frequently and brought butter, eggs and other produce to sell to the soldiers. He said:

"The first time I ever saw Grant was at his tent which was pitched, to the best of my recollection, about where Missouri Avenue crosses Love Street in west Mexico. It was somewhere within a block north of where John Atchison's house now stands. I remember that C. P. Wade's saw mill was down in the timber north of Grant's headquarters and there was a clearing to the south of the saw mill.

Grant wore a short stubby beard that covered the greater portion of his face; he was a frequent visitor at our house in the country and ate dinner with us several times. He was busy all the time and drove that yellow team in a rush. Once or twice he came out and rode one of the dun horses; I can remember that very well.
