Avington Wayne Simpson, 27 year old Farmer, born in Wayne County, Kentucky, Private, Company C, 5th Regiment Missouri Infantry, enlisted January 17, 1862 at Bolivar, Mo. by Capt. Bradford for one year, elected 1st Lieutenant May 15, 1862, due Privates pay 15 days before election, recorded on the Mar/Apr, 1863 muster roll as detailed as Recruiting Officer, returned to Company July 17, subsequently signs muster rolls as Commanding Company, captured at Blakeley, Alabama April 9, 1865, received at Ship Island, Miss. April 16, transferred to Vicksburg, Miss. April 28 via New Orleans, La., exchanged May 1, paroled May 12 at Jackson, Miss., resident of Bolivar, Polk County, Mo.

Page 23, [GGrand Uncle In His Own Words] Was at Battle of Elkhorn, Ark., March 7 & 8. Then crossed the Miss. River & participated in the battles of Farmington & Iuka. Was slightly wounded in arm at Iuka. Was detailed & sent West of the Miss. River as Recruiting Officer Mar. 8, 1863. Returned to Command July 1863 having been promoted 1st Lieutenant May 15, 1862. Served as such during the campaign in Ga. Was at the battle of Alltoona, Ga. and Franklin, Tenn. Served six months as Lt. in Co. H 2nd Regt. 8th Div. M. S. G. and was in the battles at Oak Hills, Drywood & Lexington
