Matt Matthews: "While I am still researching this, it would appear that Quantrill and his men did, in fact, kill one Red Leg in Lawrence."

Good catch, Matt. That said, we know that the lack of Red Legs in Lawrence at the time of the raid led to speculation that the Red Legs and Quantrill were in cahoots. The same kind of conspiracy theories arise today; after all, no one wants to admit publicly that they were so utterly punked: everything has to be a conspiracy.

So that said, do you have any ideas as to why there were so few Red Legs in Lawrence that morning? Capt. Hoyt had a hotel room in Lawrence and even confessed that he had a horse stolen during the raid, but he was safely elsewhere when Quantrill rode in. I suspect he was in Leavenworth. I don't know why, other than that Ewing was there. Can you give us an insight?
