More slaveowning Unionists
Not only was the subject of the letter a slave-owning Unionist, the author of the letter, Missouri U.S. Congressman James S. Rollins, was one of the largest slaveholders in Missouri, as well as one of the state's staunchest Unionists during the war. In addition, Odon Guitar, who endorsed Rollins's letter, was a slave-owning Unionist, as well as a general in the Union Army. Coincidentally, Odon Guitar was also the brother of slave-owning Unionist David Guitar--whose political mischaracterization by a newspaper writer a while back got this thread up and running....
