Thanks for all the additional information. Sounds like Dallas did burn twice. I'll disregard Private Allan's statements about Hecker's presence in the spring of 1862. Hope you get your hands on Allan's letters at some point. All I have of his correspondence was the brief passage I posted previously from Ms. Siddali's book.

My grandfather was George W. Williams. He grew up in Marble Hill and, as I previously mentioned, started out in dentistry at Puxico. I don't think he was there for more than a couple of years before moving his family and practice to Flat River, then eventually St. Louis. He had a brother, Homer, who was a judge for many years, in the 40s and 50s, in Marble Hill.
