Hi all, I am trying to find military service for James Columbus Harvey (b1838 New Hope, Lincoln, Missouri). What I know:
1. Admitted to West Point USMA 1854 (Class of '58 or '59). I have a letter from father stating his appt. for examination and he is listed in a few books listing cadets.
2. Union Provost Marshall letter listing citizens in Lincoln Co. April 1864 stating he is a Captain in "Rebel" Army.
3. There is an UDC card @ MO State archives listing him Capt. in Col. Dorsey Cavalry
4. There is an account of him from this book p11 HX. of Elsberry, Lincoln, MO by Clarence Cannon. Columbus Harvey, serving in the Confederate Army, came home on a furlough and was reported by an informer to be at the home of his father, Francis Harvey on Bryant's Creek. Orders came from Troy to bring Rebel Lum Harvey in... First Lieutenant Wm. D. Jamison was ordered to take a detachment to the Har-vey Farm and bring Lum back "dead or alive." "Bill Dave" refused to accept the order unless he was allowed to select the men of his de-tachment, and when granted that privilege,selected only men of the neighborhood who knew the Harvey Family.... Eventually Bill Dave came in and led his men up to the house and searched the premises without finding Lum, of course, and posted Sergeant John Ferry at the head of the Auburn lane with instructions to re-main two hours and then catch up with the company. Seeing his old friend on guard, Lum came out of the woods and said he was willing to sur-render because he knew he would get a square deal. But Ferry explain-ed that when they got to Troy they would not be in charge and refused to accept his surrender and told him to get on back to his regiment, which he did.

Would anyone have an idea what regiment or unit I could find him. Who was Col. Dorsey? Any guidance would be much appreciated. thanks JT
