The Olvis in the NY Times article I believe was OLVIS, RICHARD of the 82nd EMM see:

Note he is listed as "deserted" after 267 days of mustered service which calculates to Jul 17, 1864 which makes me wonder if he just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...

Maybe more than one local Union man was killed in the "fever of the moment".
