Re: Engagements? 60th Regiment EMM Co C

Stemont,

I draw a complete blank on this guy in the 1860 Missouri Census under "Shrum" or "Schrum" anywhere in the state. I wanted to get more on this man to fill in his military service, but I can't from any source other than his military record. Either the census-taker missed the man (rather common with young single men not living with their family) or Gian Shrum moved into the Bates County area after the census was taken there and before he enrolled in the 60th EMM in early December 1862. The only possibility is that the census taker may have written him down as "John" Shrum instead of Gian Shrum, based solely on pronunciation.

After reading the military record, I seriously doubt Gian Shrum lived in Butler County which is located near the "bootheel" in southeast Missouri across the state from Bates County. Since Butler is the county seat of Bates County and the records clearly states Gian was enrolled in Company C of the 60th EMM in "Butler" and was mustered into the unit in "Butler, Mo." that clinches this point for me. Missouri geography has little traps for genealogists like the town of Butler is nowhere close to Butler County, the town of Laclede being noplace near Laclede County, and so forth.

I wish you well in your hunt.

Bruce
