His Compiled Service Record file contains no muster rolls, however a handwritten War Department note dated March 9, 1937 records:
" Caleb Dorsey Appears to have been in command at various times of several different bodies of men who were raised in Mo. for the Confed. service.
"He was paid for service as Capt. of ???? Mo. Gde. from June 27/61 to Dec. 27 1861 and as Col. of Inf. from the latter date.
"He was captured while rectg [reconnoitering] near the Osage River Feb 15 1862 & was imprisoned at Alton Ill Camp Chase Ohio & Ft. Warren Mass and was delivered to the Confed Agent at Aikens Landing Va Aug 5, 1862 at which time his age was stated as 28 yrs, height 6 feet
"Subsequently he is mentioned as Capt as Maj & as Col in command of troops and on Aug 20, 1864 he was authorized to recruit a regt of Cav for Shelby's Brig CSA"
"He appears in Nov[?] 1864 to have been in command of a body of confed troops in Mo,
"No later rec found."
