The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Gen. John S. Bowen,Grand Gulf and Port Gibson MS

Rebecca Drake and I are reprinting with annotations the Civil War diary of Elizabeth Meade Ingraham with proceed to go to the preservation of Champion Hill battlefield. I need help in identifying this "Captain N-" of the diary.

From the diary: May 2, 1863 - "Just at sundown, up drove an ambulance, and out got Mrs.
General Bowen, baby, and servant, escorted by stuttering, squinting, Captain N-."

They were fleeing Gran't advance on Vicksburg and had just left Grand Gulf as Gen. Bowen rushed to defend Port Gibson and delay the advance.

Were there any officers among Bowen's men who might be this Captain? He was possibly a surgeon. A later version of the diary uses the name Captain Noll. (Spelling may be Naul or Knole, Knowles, etc.) But any Capt. N- among Bowen's men would be of interest to me.

Thanks,
Sue Moore
