On January 16, 1868, the US government removed James Cunningham and 167 other Union soldiers from the Ironton Cemetery and other close areas to Ironton and interred them at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery at St. Louis.
This James Cunningham is listed as being a private, but the cemetery records are not always accurate as the reburial unit used whatever they could find in the grave or on a possible marker to identify the soldier. Over half of those soldiers from the Ironton area were reburied as UNKNOWN.
