Re: Major Wilson
In Response To: Re: Major Wilson ()

While documenting monuments in the state, I researched the names on the Louisiana Monument and this is what I came up with. The main items are that:
1) They are not buried there, but I also have reason to doubt that they are buried at the church described, but don't want to get into that.
2) They are not all victims of the execution.
3) The fact that one of the names is a person who only died while in the 3rd MSM makes me continue to believe that the story of 6 people being killed with Wilson is false. If six had been executed, those are the names that would be on the monument. Only 5 were killed with him and Wilson makes the 6th person. This jives at least in my mind with some of the statements in the Missouri Democrat.
4) Please note that one of the soldiers (Shew) is from Ralls County and not Pike County as the monument describes.
I hope this helps.

Gourley, William W. (Waler W. or Growley, Walker W.) Corporal 3rd MSM Cavalry I Residence Louisana MO Mustered 8 Apr 1862 Died 3 Oct 1864 Captured at Ponder's Mill; murdered along w/ Major James Wilson

Evans, William F. Co I 3rd MSM resident of Louisiana MO died from a fall from a horse in Sep 1862. So he is not one of those executed! Refer to this webpage http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/details.asp?id=S111316&conflict=Civil%20War&txtName=Evans,%20W&selConflict=Civil%20War&txtUnit=3&rbBranch=all#

Shaw (Shew), John W. Private 3rd MSM Cavalry I Resident Louisiana, MO Mustered 3 Apr 1862 Executed with Major Wilson, age19, dark hair, dark eyes, light complexion, single farmer, native of Madison Co KY, resident of Ralls Co MO

Skeggs (Scaggs), William Private 3rd MSM Cavalry I Haven't found residence location, but since his name is on the monument I would assume Louisiana Captured at Ponder's Mill; Peterson Book, executed with Major Wilson

Gourley, William W. (Waler W. or Growley, Walker W.) Corporal 3rd MSM Cavalry I Residence Louisana MO8 Apr 1862 Died 3 Oct 1864 Captured at Ponder's Mill; Peterson Book, murdered along with Major James Wilson

I've determined that Hollow Oley is really John Holabaugh who was also executed with Wilson
Holabaugh, John Private 3rd MSM Cavalry K Mustered 16 Jan 1864 Died 3 Oct 1864 Murdered with Major Wilson, 10/3/1864;
