Syracuse, MO 1861-1862

Greetings.

I am researcher with particular interest in the Butterfield Overland Mail (stagecoach) Route 1858-1861. Please see website http://www.heritagetrailpartners.com/driving_guide.html if you like.

Of particular consideration is in context to the fate of Shackleford's Station in Syracuse, MO, and its proprietor Mr. ??? Shackleford. It is my understanding that Mr. Shackleford (and perhaps his partner-- one T.R. Brayton) was executed in late-1861 / 1862 during a raid on the town by Confederate sympathizers. I have several unsubstantiated reports that Mr. Shackleford and seven or eight other prominent men of the town were executed as "Union Men" and the rail / stagecoach station were burned. Unfortunately, I can find no reliable data about this incident.

Does anyone know of any substantial information / cite-able resources about this incident?

Many thanks
