Armament union provisional cavalry division

Somewhere I saw reference that most of the union volunteer cavalry regiments in Missouri had been armed with Spencer carbines prior to Price's raid in the fall of 1864 and that the Missouri State Militia cavalry regiments were rearmed with standard, single shot carbines such as the Sharps and Smith at the same time. I cannot remember where I saw that reference. Can anyone please help steer me in the right direction? Thanks,
George
