Judy:
Where did your James Mallory Collins live before the war?
My family lived in Macon Co. Mo. Daniel Herrin is listed as serving under Poindexter; capturered in Linn Co either Aug 7 of 21 in Linn Co; sent to Gratiot St Prison; sent to Alton September 12, 1862 and then to Sandusky, OH on Nov 14, 1862.
Our Ancesters were traveling together. Daniel died at Johnston Island 16 January 1863. He is in Grave No. 60 for Herrin, Dan'l (John).
Some records indicated this person is John Herrin. I believe Daniel gave his brother's name when captured; the Provost Marshall records for Missouri has an entry for a Daniel Herrin from Macon Co., Mo dated March 12, 1862 indicating that Daniel Herron took the oath and released.
About the time Daniel was captured several prisoners from the battle of Kirksvill, who had previously taken the oath but were recaptured, were killed in Macon City. I think Daniel gave the wrong name to avoid similar fate.
Interesting that James Mallory Collins was listed as being with Poindexter is May of 1862 - I have a note that Poindexter did not return to Missouri until June of 1862.
Records for the confederate Missourians are so incomplete....
