It is my understanding that the photo of Jeff Thompson is a pre-war photo, showing him in the uniform of the Missouri Volunteer militia. He was division inspector of his military district before the war.

The Guard never adopted an official uniform for officers or enlisted men. Some few companies had uniforms, but they consisted of whatever they could put together with what materials they had available. While uniform descriptions are few and far between, none of the companies apparently wore the same outifts insofar as my research has found. From the descriptions I have read, some companies would have looked pretty sharp, but others not so much. One newspaper article remarked on one of the companies' "semi-uniforms," whatever that may have been!
