A good place to start to understand the type of conflict in Missouri that Clifton Holsclaw fought, I'd highly recommend Bruce Nichols series on Guerrilla War in Civil War Missouri 1862 Vol I, and 1863 Vol II,

Click on the authors or book box in top left corner of the index screen of the disccusion list.

There are several good works by a number of others that you'll recognize from the list as well. I also suggest to click on the Civil War Saint Louis site listed on the bottom of the index web page.

(And Jim M. don't scold me for tooting your horn, the list is a great resource and goes under appreciated frequently!)
