Charles Biel in the 1860 census was residing in the household of John C Layton, a merchant in Cinque Hommes Township of Perry County. Age 20 and born in Bavaria.
McGhee's Roster of the Missouri State Guard lists him as a Private in Co D, 3rd Cav Regt. Discharged 27 Dec 1861 at New Madrid. He was credited with 2 mos 23 days of service.
Only other Perry County soldier in that unit was James E Hayden who later was KIA at Vicksburg.
No further record of service found for Charles Biel. His brother William, who lived in Pilot Knob, served in the EMM.
1870 Census has him as a farmer in Saline Township, Sainte Genevieve County.
1880 Census has him as a storekeeper on Main Street in Saiinte Genevieve where he lived the remainder of his life.

He ran for Presiding Judge in 1886 and was defeated in the primary election.
He was elected Sheriff in 1892 and 1894 but did not run for reelection in 1896.
He later ran for County Treasurer twice but was defeated in the primary elections.

What is unusual to me that he was born in Germany and was a member of the Missouri State Guard except that the familly that he lived with in 1860 were slaveholders and from southern roots.
