The U.S.S. Diana was captured by Captain Timothy D. Nettles and the Valverde Battery (12th Texas Field Battery) on March 28, 1863 on the Atchafalaya River. On April 11, 1863 the Diana was introduced into Confederate service and, along with Nettles' artillery, was instrumental in driving back Union forces at Bayou Teche. Capt. Nettles fell ill and Capt. Oliver Semmes assumed command on April 13. After engaging Union Forces at Bayou Tech and Camp Bisland the Diana made repairs and was ordered up river to Franklin, La. When the Confederate forces were forced to withdraw from Franklin, Captain Semmes and his crew abandoned and burned the diana to prevent her recapture by the Federals. This was on the Atchafalaya river and not the Gulf of Mexico. You must have this ship confused with another.
