Union prison for Confederates in Louisiana

An 80 year old cousin who grew up in Covington remembers a friend telling him about finding buttons, gun balls, & buckets from a Union prison for Confederates in the dirt which was being brought for fill for Interstate 12 which crosses the Tchefuncta River in Louisiana. He was told that the items were from a Union prison for Confederates . He was told that the Confederate prisoners who ran away went in the Pearl River swamp. Was his friend mistaken or leading my cousin on? I found references to a Union prison in Shreveport in an old tobacco factory and one on ship Island which was also called Fort Massachusetts.

I thought maybe I should, but could not figure out how to post to this site which I found about an unrelated later prison in New Orleans
