Mr. Wertz:

The following is probably of more interest to you than to the original posters, although they may also find it of general interest.

If Mooreland Plantation and Lodi are the same, (and I admit I don't understand the references to Lodi and Emfield plantations, especially after finding this ad referenced below), I truly hope that someone along the way has taken the brick out of the 5 underground cisterns (of 85,000-90,000 gallons each) and back filled the holes, especially if they are on/near to a school.

The ad mentions that Gov. Moore is living in the overseer's house because the main dwelling house, sugar house, and "larger portion of the quarter being burnt" prior to 1869 (date of the ad), certainly makes one think it was a result of the war.

The ad mentions that the plantation known as Mooreland is 8 miles South of Alexandria, and I found a reference from 1882 that it was 8 miles from Alexandria to "Mooreland Station" on the railroad.

The ad mentions other buildings, including a hospital, four other double framed houses, two horse and ox stables, a large 2 story brick store room, and a brick meat house, all still standing in 1869.

I will continue to work on this and will post anything I find here.

Regards,
Hoyt Cagle
